The University of Algarve has been teaching Marine Biology since 1983, hosting a large number of undergraduate and graduate students in Marine Sciences. It is also one of the leading poles in Marine Biology research in Portugal, and in Marine Biology and Conservation, hosting two research centers in Marine Sciences, CCMAR, the Centre of Marine Sciences (http://www.ccmar.ualg.pt/) and CIMA, Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (http://www.cima.ualg.pt/).

The University of Algarve participates in the MARBEF network and in this MSc degree via CIMAR-Associate Laboratory, a major research center uniting the University of Algarve research center CCMAR with CIMAR (http://www.cimar.org/), the Centre of Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto, and linked with other research centers in marine sciences located in Lisbon, at ISPA (http://www.ispa.pt/ISPA/vPT/Investigacao/UnidadesInvestigacao/UIE-E/), and INETI (http://www.ineti.pt/). As an Associate Laboratory, CIMAR is recognized as a national centre of excellence in Marine Sciences, receiving funding directly from the Ministry of Science. Research themes include a wide range of subjects, arranged in four lines: 1) Ecology, Biodiversity and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems, 2) Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology, 3) Biology and Marine Biotechnologies, and 4) Aquaculture. CIMAR coordinates a national network of marine biodiversity and has been participating in a wide range of national and international projects relevant to Marine Biodiversity and Conservation as well as in several other international networks and platforms besides MARBEF, such as Marine Genomics Europe, BIOPLATFORM, CORONA, MARBENA.
